“And when they had sung a hymn…”
Taking a break from our exploration of hymns….In this last half of the month of January, I want to offer some meditations on music, hymns, etc from the Scripture. Matthew 26:30 describes the conclusion of the Passover meal in which Christ had instituted the Lord’s Supper.
“And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”
Willem A. VanGemeren writing in the Expositor’s Bible Commentary series on Psalms writes
“Psalms 113-118 are known as the “Egyptian Hallel” psalms. The Hallel psalms had a significant place in the praise (hallel) of the LORD. ….The Egyptian Hallel psalms received a special place in the Passover liturgy, as 113-114 were recited or sung before and 115-118 after the festive meal.”
